Was once travelling back through Belfast George Best airport after a business trip. Went to the small bar there to get my mandatory pint of Guinness before boarding, and who did I see at the bar but Frank Carson. There he was drinking red wine and holding court, telling stories and wise cracking jokes. After a while, pretty much the whole bar had gathered round to watch and laugh along. Loads of people were buying him drinks (“a large red wine”) and he had them all queued up on the bar. He drank like a horse, god knows what he got down him while he was there.
Anyway, eventually his flight was called, and off he toddled to get his flight to Gatwick, after everyone had shaken his hand, taken selfies and wished him well.
He was a genuinely lovely person. You got the feeling he’d tell jokes to his reflection in a mirror. This was years ago, and of course he’s no longer with us, but he left me with a lovely memory.
