Even if it's not coming across well to you, it does sound like they care

Which can only be a good thing. I can see how the Chinese whispers bit is annoying for someone that is introverted and private - I'd be the same.

I don't think there's an obligation for everyone to reach out and talk these days, but a recognition that in the past there were people who it could have helped but they didn't get the chance because no-one asked.
