I work in Superyacht management in the South of France

Storms like this are very common in the Med, more common than you might think. My boss had his sailing yacht dismasted in a similar squall within half a mile of the shore off Antibes a couple of years ago, on an otherwise perfect summer day day, so this s**t does happen. Waterspouts are also more common than you might think but most are not seen or reported because they happen away from land. So yes this would be almost impossible to engineer, but what happened to his associate is a very weird coincidence.
