I figured that if a player was moving to a club for a lower wage, then the selling club might have to pay up all or part of the difference remaining on the contract.

If a player was moving for equal or better terms, I just assumed that the selling clubs obligation in terms of wages would end at the point of transfer, not until the end of the contract.
