Will you have a look at the absolute state of the Euro 16 England squad? Some youngsters that we now know will go on to be excellent players, but some absolute dross too, and zero strength in depth. We've have progressed hugely under Southgate, and he deserves huge praise for the ethos he has created. But I'm going to argue that the main reason we have made progress is the players are just much much better - hardly surprising Woy couldn't get a tune out of this.
So surely most of the improvement since these dark days is really thanks to the revamp of youth football by the FA (right?) and at least some shift in the home grown rule by the Premier League? Not that I'm having a pop at Gareth, but this narrative that we were really s**t and might go back to being really s**t isnt right.
