This is the issue. It only needs a tiny bit of traction, and before you know it it will grow hugely.
Remember that much of the German electorate is still really only a couple of generations removed from that which should not be mentioned, and that a good portion of the electorate are pushed further right by growing up in a Communist state.
France's far right has always had a bit of traction. Le Pen the first was very prominent back when I was visiting France as a teenager. Perhaps not threatening to actually get into power, but I do remember there was a certain amount of tension that he might get over that hump.
