Well, given that until Southgate no England manager had ever taken us to

more than one tournament semi-final would suggest that it's certainly not failure to go out at the QF stage. We can point to the players he has, but Erikssen had similar (with a better defence) and Ramsey also had a great squad.

However, Southgate has now reached more Quarter Finals (4) than any other England manager (Erikssen next with 3), and he has not only qualified but made at least the QF in every tournament we've entered under his reign.

Therefore we could suggest that his failure to entertain us while achieving this is disappointing. Perhaps even that he hasn't yet managed to cap it all off with the big prize, but failure?
