The biggest criticism of Southgate has to be that it took him two and a half games

to see that we needed someone in midfield who is natural at receiving and passing the ball quickly.

Because (a) it was obvious before the tournament even started and (b) it's been the problem under Southgate in previous tournaments too - losing control in midfield is always where we fail.
