I don't think he has ever said "We weren't s**t" or "this team is worse than we were"

Quite the contrary in fact. He's just saying "that performance was s**t", which it indisputably was. Anyone criticising him for saying "that performance was s**t" can only be doing so because they have an axe to grind with him. (Which lots of people do, obviously.)
