Pretty much every tournament has followed the same pattern for the past 20 years

brilliant in the group stages, especially the first two games, then gets progressively less open and a bit less fun as the tournament goes on.

But because we get used to the latter bits (and other football) we get surprised all over again when the first sets of games are brilliant.
