I don't think it's so much the principle of spending a year 'doing good'

it's the sudden, out of thin air, shoe-horning in of an uncosted sop for boomers to get excited about in a 'back in my day' kind of way'[, even though you'd now have to be 85 to actually have experienced national service in this country.

It's totally cynical, it will never, ever happen and it's an election ploy to demonise young people rather than actually provide them with the genuine opportunities they need.
