Norwich City have agreed to sign Panamanian defender José Córdoba from Levski Sofia.

The 23-year-old defender will be the club's first signing of the summer window, and first signing under new head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup.

Speaking to canaries.co.uk, Córdoba said: "I see Norwich is like a family, and I was looking for something like that. The idea of the club and the feeling went directly to me and I felt that I had to make this choice."

Sporting director Ben Knapper added: "We’re delighted to welcome José and his family to Norwich City. He is a player we have been tracking for a long time and we think he fits really well with what we’re looking for.

"As a person, he is extremely impressive, and he showed a big desire to join us here and be a part of our great club.

"On the pitch, his combination of technical ability and athleticism gives him a great foundation, and we feel he still has big steps in his development to come.

"Under Johannes’ guidance, along with the rest of our staff, we feel sure we can help him achieve his potential.

"We’re all really excited to work with José."

Now capped 12 times for his country, Córdoba came through the ranks at Independiente de La Chorrera in Panama before moving to Celta Vigo in Spain where he represented their B team.

A stint at Etar Veliko Tarnovo followed before he joined Levski Sofia, initially on loan. The Blues would then make his transfer permanent in April 2022.

He will now join Panama's training camp for their World Cup qualifiers against Guyana and Montserrat, followed by the Copa América where he will face Josh Sargent and the USA in the group stage, along with Bolivia and Uruguay.

The transfer is subject to international clearance and approval by The FA and EFL when the transfer window opens on Friday, June 14.
