Quality of players is obviously a big factor....

but the transformation we saw when Alex Neil took over from Adams, or when Lambert took over from Gunn, shows that the manager can make a huge difference.

Those are extreme examples because neither Adams nor Gunn were really football managers.

I think it's a case of the right manager, at the right time, with the right players, and you need some luck.

Would Guardiola have got us promoted last season? Highly unlikely with those players. Would Wagner have won the league at Man City? I seriously doubt it with his limited tactics. Farke might have done though. Would I want Farke back? No, don't think his style is suited to us.

Etc. etc. so many variables and yes, recruitment of players is the biggest, I agree. Just having brilliant players is no good though if the manager can't get the style / tactics right to exploit their ability.
