Until the last couple of seasons I cared about getting promoted from the championship, or staying up if we were in the premier league. I live overseas and travel for work, so would find myself motivated to get up at odd times to watch games . I would think about football a lot, chewing over the stats and permutations that we often have at the end of our seasons. What would we need to do to secure promotion, or escape the drop? I used to care about it… probably more than someone of my age ought to.
But this year… it’s gone.
I mildly give a toss about whether we go up, but what’s the point of promotion when it means another season of being outplayed by clubs funded by billionaires and petro states? The Jonathan Liew piece in The Guardian perfectly captured the meaningless toil of life at the bottom of the Premier League.
I realise this might come across as trite, but it’s really come in to focus for me at this “business end” of the season.
Anyone else feel like this, or am I just a miserable bar steward?
