But the effort and teamwork that went into their press was great. Our attempts at pressing are miles off the standard they set last night, that for a team with a manager that has said they are looking to press high up the pitch.
I get that a large part of that is that we don’t have the players capable of it, but the gulf between us and Luton is, as Jim would say, a worry. If what we saw last night is the kind of thing we are aiming for, then my word have some to do on it over the summer.
The other thing I saw (the absence of which is far less forgivable in our squad) was the Luton players absolutely busting a gut to get back into position on the occasions when Sunderland were breaking after the broke the press of pinched the ball. Lung busting runs aplenty to get back behind the ball, to support an exposed full back, to fill a defensive gap. Not once did I see a “someone else will do it” or “not my problem” attitude. The number of times I saw sides breaking against us and could see our lads ambling back. Infuriating.
I never expect Norwich players to be the best in the league (which was what made the promotion seasons under Farke so amazing and unexpected) but I think I have a right to expect full effort every time the shirt is pulled on. From about 10 games out that was so missing. Most of the players just looked like they had checked out. Not good enough.
