Growing up in the 1980s:
Music was s**t (well okay, as ever there was good and bad stuff... but... tapes replacing vinyl, stock aitkin waterman replacing punk)
the food was s**t (much less variety in the supermarket, generally of worse quality)
Eating out was s**t (ropey steakhouses, old and tired italian/chinese restaurants, old and tired hotels)
Clothes were s**t (shellsuits, shoulder pads)
Computers were s**t (I whiled away many hours typing programmes into my ZX Spectrum... which was fine, cos there was f**k all else to do - three telly channels, the nearest cinema was half hour bus ride away)
Cars were s**t (they were always breaking down)
Naturally, I'm playing devil's advocate a bit here, I quite enjoyed my childhood, but, looking at my son now, I'm still of the view that there's a fair bit around it all being what you make of it - and there's certainly a world more entertainment, opportunity and ability to learn new stuff at everyone's fingertips now than ever before.
(Just to make the counterargument)
