And think that his flexibility and willingness to try to fill gaps meant we never got the best from him, and that he doesn't get full recognition for his achievements.
His bowling record in the year before being dropped after bowling with a torn hand in the Ashes was world class.
The list of his batting averages at different positions in the line up also suggests that criticism of him not scoring big from number 8 masks what his potential might have been if he'd played consistently. (he averaged over 50 playing at 4)
Lots of what-ifs and I'd hope that the lessons learned from mismanagement will help the next batch coming through.
