I've just listened to a Matt Le Tissier podcast (so you don't have to)

He says:
the most he earned at Soton "as a basic wage" was just under £4k pw (so extras presumably to top that up)
in 1995 he was on £2k pw and had the chance to join Chelsea, where his wage "might have been 9 or 10"
