Given the shares are hardly likely to carry much in the way of dividends ('all surplus funds invested into the football club' or whatever the preamble to our accounts says) I'm struggling to see what the commercial rationale for a minority stake would be.

Unless we're about to load up on American debt and the equity is their way of overseeing how it's spent? So ultimately 'control' comes down to their ability to call these debts in.
