Anyhow it’s effectively a new job now and what have we seen to suggest Smith is the best option for next season?

What have we seen that suggests he knows how to get the best out of the bulk of the players that we will have next season? Even if we sell a couple and buy a few in the next 2-3 months, the squad is the squad.
