As a younger man on a road trip around the SW of America, I saw Jackie Mason in a Starbucks in San Francisco. It seems that I was the only person that recognised him, and he seemed slightly put out that everyone was ignoring the s**t out of him.
Also, coming back from a business trip to Belfast, went into the bar at George Best Airport and saw Frank Carson sitting their waiting for his flight. He was holding court, telling jokes and anecdotes with everyone in the bar gathered around him in a horseshoe. He was loving it. People kept buying him drinks, and in the hour I was there, he drank 7 large glasses of red wine, before wandering off to get the flight to Gatwick.
(That last one was actually quite impressive - it's a lovely memory. It might have all been an act, but he came across as a genuinely lovely man, who would have told jokes and made people laugh whether he was famous or not.)
