Our owners couldn't cover the shortfall we'd have. We're self sufficient only really because we get a share of prem riches. Even in the Champs without parachute payments all teams get a share of Prem "solidarity" (bribery) payments to top up the pittance the Champs pays and keep them viable. Whenever we've lost parachute payments (eg summer 2018) we've had to flog players like Maddison to survive.
