how much luck is invovled in this

i get it's a fad and it's fun and ppl love to show off their apparent skills. and it's also a social thing that everyone can join in. you can also fake your level of intelligence by cheating. so where is the value in this? i don't mean to ruin ppl's fun but where is this going? there will soon be another way to express your ego with another puzzle.
