I reckon...

draw a line from around Warrington down to Macclesfield, around the bottom edge of Peak District, across to Mansfield* then somehow get to Skeggy without including Lincoln ('cos they're surely not Northerners?)

*the area from there down to** (and possibly including) Derby is a bit of a grey area. Nottingham is not the North.

**My Yorkshire uncle would dispute that anything in Derbyshire is the North. Which might be because he is bitter at marrying into a Chesterfield family.

As a general rule of thumb (though it gets a bit messed up around the Potteries, and Cheshire) I'm OK with giving an automatic Northerner pass to anyone who uses the affection 'Duck'.
