That argument only works if.....

the lino and ref were aware Godfrey was offside but concluded he was not interfering with play.

Which would still be a clear and obvious error in my view, so still bulls**t.

The options are:

1. The lino missed Godfrey being offside; VAR should intervene

2. The ref and lino were aware he was off, but didn't think he interfered; VAR should still intervene as still obviously wrong.
