Well you do still eliminate letters, of course. When there are lots of options you pick a word that contains letters in as many of the other options to start with so if it is incorrect you can eliminate more. And that sometimes works but this time there was a ridiculous number of options. All the yellows went green and all the whites are unique. In that situation then yeah I think abandoning this approach so you have more letter spaces to eliminate more letters is the way
