It’s not the toaster. It’s the bread. Though back in the day

We would hold slices of bread over our fires in the cave thus avoiding the problem. Could never do that these days cos the cave would have to be fitted with a smoke alarm according to buildings regs and the f**ker would keep going off no matter how many times you pressed the button. Bloody health and safety.
