If you want book recs and like The Wire

Homicide and The Corner, probably in that order, by David Simon are very much modern classics. He basically embedded himself for a year in the Baltimore Homicide unit and then for a year on the kind of drug corner you see depicted in The Wire. Harrowing, hilarious, heartbreaking and all true, and no I neither publish nor represent the author of that book.
