I think the squad was set up to play either system

depending of on the opponent...but we fell somewhere between the two because of low confidence, out of form players and injuries. Smith and Shakes have to be more pragmatic at the moment, I expect to see 4-3-3 and 4-5-1 more often than a 4-2-3-1 which as you point out means no room for Cantwell or Dowell
