Yeah, the nuance of this is going to keep lots of talking heads in business for a long time.
Feel very sorry for your wife - we've had 18 months and it's notable that the airlines spend more time moaning about the damage to trade than explaining about the safety protocols they have (or haven't?) put in place. The tech exists for plane air to be filtered and kept fresh rather than recirculated. Can insist that people wear (provided) proper grade masks. Can ensure that people are vaxxed before travel (negative tests can form a part of the suite too, though as the ludicrous story of the woman who tested positive mid flight and locked herself in a toilet for five hours shows,imperfect).
There's a tonne of stuff we should have been spending the last year doing to just make our environment safer, but the public discourse has been muddled into an imbecilic dichotomy. As the dude says in his book, the costs of being proactive are dwarfed by the lockdown costs (although I think it would have been hard to follow the Swedish model in 2020 here for a whole host of reasons)
We'll get there in the end...
