If the spike in cases is short and sharp, and the variant does actually cause serious illness in fewer cases (not yet proven by a long way) then it would be.
Good as in relative to the incumbent dominant variant, not good as in relative to no covid.
I mean, eventually the only way out of this situation is when a highly transmissible but mild variant becomes dominant worldwide.
