But I'm old enough to remember when they first broke, and their place in the 80's/90's thrash and metal scene. They were absolutely unstoppable. Just look at the huge influence every modern metal musician still says they have on them.

Not overrated. Just not to your taste, or a bit dated against some of the stuff around now.
Bear in mind they influenced bands now hailed as influential like Slipknot, Mastodon, Deftones etc etc etc who are now legacy bands themselves.

I don't like the Beatles, but wouldn't call them overrated.
