Fwiw I’ve done that - fascinating process. You saw a real mix of potential candidates: the student politicos, party insiders, a few with genuine passion to do some good, but mostly those who just wanted to be an MP and it didn’t matter where/who for. Very little actual stand out quality.

We picked the local guy who’d been a councillor for years. CCHQ was not amused.

A work colleague got himself elected at the second attempt. First attempt cost him £25k of his own money, presume second attempt was the same. I’m sure he will now earn it all back with interest from the connections he is making and the profile it gives him, but it’s not ‘generally’ a career option for normal people of normal means.
