if you think of every signing as having a chunk of randomness or luck attached

guess you reduce that when a manager signs a player he knows. so probably something to be said for it (though the selling club should prob realise this and up the price accordingly - the manager who knows him is gonna want him a bit more than a manager who's taking a punt).
