I don't think its a huge mystery

Delta has come to a lot of those countries later, so they're seeing some of the impact of it that we saw earlier. And related to that, because they didn't have the high summer / early autumn numbers we have, they have lower levels of immunity than we do at the moment.

Plus, they vaccinated a little bit later than we did, so they're seeing the effects of waning immunity that we've seen a bit later. And in some places (German-speaking bits in particular) they do still have lower vaccination levels.
