Here is how I suspect things went...

1) D&M and SW all loved DF to the moon and back
2) SW starts to fear for his professional reputation after a poor start, following a very public declaration pre season that they knew all along and effectively planned for being relegated in PL1 season 1, but had a clever strategy for survival/consolidation in PL2.
3)Knee-jerk by Webber with an upcoming international break where he convinces D&M that DF must go and that it would be too late if they didn't act immediately.
4) FL targeted by SW in a typically ego-centric attempt to raise his profile once again with gullible section of fanbase who are frothing at the mouth for a 'big name Charlie' to ease the pain. Other candidates like Smith and Knutson conveniently allow SW to play the local press and fill the expected short list of candidates for a PL appointment.
5)Delia begins reading around the concerns of sane fans who would much prefer a better fit for the club a la DF mould rather than short-termist types and calls SW to task.
6) SW instructed to disregard FL and to target Knutson and then Smith in that order. If neither are available SW is asked to convince Roy Hodgson to take the helm until the end of the season.
