But what does "make a go of it for at least for a while" actually mean?

To me, and it's just me and I respect your view, it means we have a few boring seasons where we play the conglomerates, but there is little joy or fun. Then we go down.

Contrast that with the joy our club has brought us in our recent promotion seasons.

I always think of Charlton, who were habitually mid table, no fun.

The state of football is sad, but it is what it is.
