Doesn't really matter though really

If he was told 'You can leave if we don't achieve X / someone bids Y' and Spurs renege on that, you have a specific and separate claim in respect of that broken promise.

But that doesn't let you break your own promises to turn up for training, play for the club etc.

However, out in the real world, he is basically playing the 'you can't touch me' card as, ultimately what are Spurs going to do? Sack him? Stick him in the reserves? Fine him a whopping 2 weeks' wages?
