I think the three at the back worked perfectly

for the first half an hour or so. Italy had no idea how to deal with the overload on the wings.

But Southgate was then too slow in switching when Italy worked it out. He seems very astute when he can plan a game from start to finish and it make his changes as planned. But weak when having to react in game to something more unexpected.
