Too young but my mum and dad talked about it a lot

I was chatting to my Mum about it again the other day abd she revealed that she was actually in Germany visiting her pen pal at that point in 1966. She was 14. Her and her best mate from school watched the game with her pen Pal’s family, celebrating wildly when Hurst’s winner went in while the father of her pen pal maimed grumpily in German. Everyone else was silent.

Not quite sure why she has never told me this story before. She was genuinely into football as a teenager and growing up in Leeds used to go to Elland Road to watch the dirties. Since meeting my dad a year later she has not been back though and has for many years followed NCFC (dad was a lifelong city supporter and brought my brother and me up as yellows, which caused a few issues when we were at school given that we lived in Sheffield and were surrounded by Wednesdayites and Unitedites).

My niece and nephew are a bit too young to know what’s going on now with the tournament, though my nephew loves his city shirt and can already sing OTBC. Apparently he loved jumping around celebrating during the Ukraine game, after previously kicking off because my brother switched over from whatever toddler friendly kids tv programme they had on. Good luck to all of those who have to get toddlers and babies in bed before the game tonight!
