PM : old man

Only just glanced down the board. IP is my field (though a different branch to Trade Marks)

In the grand scheme of things I'd say it's pretty cheap to TM a company name. If you have an attachment to the name, or if you think you'll build up some goodwill/good rep in the business, then it could be a decent precautionary move, so long as the name isn't descriptive (or subject to any of the other exclusions here :

Actually enforcing against anyone who trod on your toes would be a costly business, but there can sometimes be value (intangible assets) built up in the name, which for a small business can be used to leverage finance (and for a large business can actually end up being worth more than the tangible assets...).

Sup to you to work out the algebra of the emotional /commercial aspects - but the process itself can be quite straightforward (depending on the name... If the childhood toy was a Disney (RTM) property, I'd probably suggest you keep your head down heheheh)
