yep, that's a great point

there's always going to be a big grey area with fouls, and particularly with penalties given their importance. And you'll never get one of those grey area penalties without trying to convince the ref in some way.

Perhaps, with VAR now awarding so many of them, it's time to get rid of penalties for offences that don't deny a goalscoring opportunity. Historically there was always a higher bar to award a penalty than a foul elsewhere on the pitch, but it's not the case any more. It doesn't feel as though the punishment fits the crime anymore.

Giving a free kick where Sterling was fouled perhaps would have been the fairest solution.
