The pension fund will invest into the hedge fund .
They often dedicate a very small proportion of assets to high risk investments.
You say it's a bad investment but they are paying a rock bottom price for something that might pay for itself.
You are then left with a saleable asset you own outright you can flip.
It's such an insignificant % overall from the pension side.
They mostly don't invest in individual projects. They invest in hedge funds that have a huge portfolio of investments.
You have to remember these pension funds often have multiple billions in assets. Hedge funds are not allowed to advertise to the general public as such and you have to be a proven sophisticated investor with huge proven assets before you will be allowed to invest. It's def 10s of millions if not 100s of millions.
It's a club for the wealthy....and you ain't in it!
