Hearing that in the context of the time was simply mind blowing. It was like an alien had landed on earth to show us something from the future.
It wasn't just the shredding either. Listen to Spanish Fly, Ice Cream Man. He knew all styles of music inside out and back to front. Then he'd turn it on it's head and show it a good time!

Legend was that in the early days before he made it, he'd turn his back on the audience when doing his trademark stuff so that his technique didn't get ripped off.
These days some phone waving arsehole would have it on YouTube before the encore.
