There has been a lot of research looking at the influence of vitamin D on covid outcomes. There appears to be a strong correlation between vitamin D deficiency and ICU/death rates. Essentially, if you are vitamin D deficient you are substantially more likely to end up in intensive care / dying.
You can get vitamin D from sunlight, diet and supplementation. I would speculate that the proportion of the population that were vit d deficient at the end of the winter / first wave would be markedly higher than now. However, this could be expected to drop again as winter kicks in / second wave. This may be a cause of the reduced severity of covid at this time.
