Two thoughts from me this morning....

1) I think Hugill is a very good signing. Rhodes got us quite a few points the season we went up, (Villa x3, Millwall x1, WBA x1, and probably others, he certainly helped change the tide against Brentford and Bristol City if I recall rightly). But more than anything, it was sooooo clear that we missed someone like him massively last season, Hugill fills that void and he’s a much better option than Drmic. I’ve seen a few naysayers, and there are more in the comments to this article, but who would be a better option within our budget?!

2) There’s a lot of focus on the need for a new CB. But do we really need one if none of the other CBs are leaving? I see this as a nice to have rather than essential. The nice to have being the opportunity to freshen it up a bit after a bad season last year. However, I am of the view that the personnel are more than good enough for the championship, and any signing would need to be of sufficient quality such that the transition on promotion (should it happen) doesn’t involve signing a new defence. I’m not sure there is that kind of player out there. I think our midfield has been a big problem in our defending, giving the ball away or otherwise leaving the defence exposed; i think it’s an organisational issue rather than personnel. I don’t think our defence would have been mean even we had van dijk in it last season.

In any case, everything I’ve read about Ben Gibson and claims around him wanting to go back to Boro makes me think he could be in the Ben Marshall camp.
