I ended up doing similar - after taking the director in question to task (respectfully/professionally).

It didn't hamper either of our careers in the end (this was a decade ago... Ish) and the director in question ended up promoting me, (the guy in question did too a couple of years later) so it seems bridges weren't permanently burned.
