I absolutely love plums and all this plum chat brings to mind two interesting FACTS
First, about 5 years ago I planted a longish stretch of hedge, buying a mix endorsed by the RSPB as particularly bird friendly. To my amazement (because it was not in the advertised mix) it includes half a dozen “cherry plums” - there are a bit like bullaces and they make absolutely amazing jam!
Second, one of my lockdown projects had been to transform a rather neglected bit of paddock into a plum orchard. This has led me into a whole world of plum geekery and finally I am planting these splendidly named plum trees: Rivers Early Prolific; Herman; Cambridge Gage; Warwickshire Drooper (oo-er); Jefferson, Seneca; Marjorie's Seedling; and Haganta.
Unfortunately I reckon it’ll be years before I get any fruit ... but when I do it’ll be brilliant!
