50 odd years ago my RE teacher said that the contemporary writings identified him as being

Black.

In many ways this Teacher was ahead of his time as although the school was definitely Christian (They made you buy the bible for O level religious studies) he taught other religions too. Sadly the though I can remember is that when this fact was revealed it was in a negative way.
