MTB disc brakes but they only really come with disc brakes.
Road bike...depends on your riding.
Definitely nice to have but if you're buying a used bike you'll have loads more choice and be able to get a rim bike for a keener price.
If you ride fast in the wet discs are a no brainer. Rim brakes are awful in the wet.
I just got a new road bike with discs. Great to have but I could live without them as I mainly ride in the dry. But they're good when hammering downhill for strava segments and someone pulls out in front of you...
Difference in wearing of pads is a non issue as you can get more resilient pads if you want durability. If you ride alot though rim brakes will wear down the wheel rim so you'll need to replace your wheelset eventually. Not so with disc brakes.
Disc brake bikes will hold their value better in future as rim brakes are slowly phased out.
